Jesus’ Kingship

(John 18:33-40)

 

Good afternoon, Brothers and Sisters! BTS is famous for reading many books. One of their favorite books is “Demian” written by Herman Hesse, a German Nobel laureate. Its theme was adapted to their 2nd album, “Wings”. The most famous symbol in the book is “a bird breaking free from an egg or a globe”, representing a true self liberated from the bondage of bias and prejudice surrounding it. A great symbol but a misguided one, not least because it has a wrong aim for flying to Abraxas, a Gnostic god, which is said to embrace all that is good and evil in the world. Inside the book, the main character ‘Sinclair’ is prompted by his mysterious classmate and friend ‘Demian’ in one way or another. Demian tries to inculcate into the mind of Sinclair some heretical thoughts concerning the story of Cain & Abel and the one of the two criminals on the cross. He claims like this: Cain is a noble man whereas Abel is a coward. If you must choose one of the two thieves on the cross today for a friend or a trusted partner, it certainly wouldn’t be the sniveling convert. Although he committed evil deeds, now he melts and takes part in tearful scenes of sorrow and repentance! What is the use of such repentance when he is only two steps away from the grave? It’s nothing but one of pious moral tales, which tastes sugary but looks unconvincing. On the other hand, the other criminal has a real character. He despises a conversion and pursues his own way to the end. He is a descendant of Cain’s.

 

Does Demian’s story ring true to you, brothers and sisters? Let’s take a look at the real story of these 2 criminals on the cross (Luke 23:39-42). The descendant of Cain’s hurled abuse at Jesus Christ, insolently demanding, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” However, the sniveling convert rebuked the Cain’s descendant and challenged him, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” And he added a clincher or a decisive statement. Do you know what it is? “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” What a marvelous confession it is! To this confession, Jesus Christ gave a great affirmation, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” What is special about this criminal’s confession of faith? He acknowledges Jesus Christ as the Lord or King as well as the Savior. This is exactly the saving faith. We have to believe Jesus Christ, not only as our Savior, but the Lord and King. Arrogant Demian and poor Sinclair! The Lordship or Kingship of Jesus Christ was the very last thing they expected to see in Him.

 

-What Kind of King Jesus Is-

(1) Eternal King

The same goes for Pontius Pilate in today’s passage. Even though he was given such an unusual privilege as to meet Jesus Christ in person, he let this golden opportunity slip through his fingers. He asked Jesus some questions such as “Are You the King of the Jews?” and “What is truth?”, in order to judge whether the charge hurled at Jesus was true or not. Jesus Christ unequivocally answered them, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” (v. 37) However, he did not pay attention to what Jesus said, because he did not ask these questions out of any real desire to know the answers. It had never crossed his mind that the person in front of him was a real cosmic King or the eternal Lord, who had not only created and sustained the world, but would save it. Notice in the following verses the inclusiveness of Christ's reign because of his role as Creator:

 

(Colossians 1:15-17) He [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

 

It is no less than 5 times that Apostle Paul highlighted that all things were created through and for Christ. To clarify the exhaustive range of ‘all things’, Paul explicitly includes ‘things in the heavens and on earth’ and then lists ‘things, visible and invisible.’ Christ is Lord over all realms in the world.

 

(2) Savior-King

What do you mean by ‘Therefore’ in verse 33? Refer to the previous verses 31-32. “So Pilate said to them, ‘Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.’ The Jews said to him, ‘We are not permitted to put anyone to death,’ to fulfill the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.” The religious authorities wanted Jesus Christ not just dead, but formally executed, i.e. crucified. They tried to make Jesus Christ look a laughingstock in front of the eyes of people. Crucifixion was manifested in the law as a sign of God’s curse (Deuteronomy 21:23), therefore a ‘crucified Messiah’ is an oxymoron, such as ‘a square circle’ or ‘silent outcry’. You know what, Brothers and Sisters? By dying ‘on a tree’, Jesus Christ has “become a curse for us” (Galatians 3:13). He took the judgment of God against our law-breaking on the cross. A crucified King, a King under curse, is the only Messiah who can meet our critical need and reconcile us to God the Father, just as Luther states it:

 

“Our merciful Father, seeing us to be oppressed and overwhelmed with the curse of the law, and to be so holden down by the same that we could never be delivered by our own power, sent his only Son into the world and laid upon him all the sins of all men, saying: be thou Peter that denier; Paul that persecutor, blasphemer and cruel oppressor; David that adulterer; that sinner which did eat the apple in Paradise; that thief which hanged upon the cross; and briefly, be thou the person which hath committed the sins of all men; see therefore that thou pay and satisfy for them.”

 

And Jesus Christ, our Savior-King, has ‘satisfied for them’, out of his everlasting love, for our everlasting salvation. (Bruce Milne) He had even saved a robber or an insurrectionist called Barabbas from a capital punishment before he died a sacrificial death on the cross.

 

 (3) Self-Restraining King  

Brothers and Sisters, have you noticed a tense atmosphere that ‘STARWARS’ would break out in this passage? Verse 36 says, “Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.’”(NIV) Probably you are reminded of another reference to angelic servants ‘from another place’, i.e. from the heavenly domain from which Jesus Christ had come (Matthew 26:53).

 

(Matthew 26:53-54) "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” "How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?"

 

Do you know how many angels there are in twelve legions? A Roman legion consisted of 6,000 soldiers, which means that Jesus Christ restrained himself from praying for “72,000 celestial reinforcements at the moment of his arrest!” Owing to “Jesus’ unprayed prayer”, STARWARS was avoided. “What if Jesus had prayed that prayer? How would history have changed? Jesus could have put an end to evil—and to all human history, for that matter—by praying for heavenly rescue forces, but he elected not to. Instead of a triumphant victory by force, he opted for a much more arduous (for him and for the rest of us) path to redemption.” (Philip Yancey)

 

Jesus is a totally different type of king compared a myriad of kings who ruled people according to their whims and wishes. What a great relief it is that we have such a self-controlling king who “causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him, to those who are called according to His purpose”! (Romans 8:28)

 

(4) Intercessor-King

The previous aspect of self-restraint with which Jesus chose not to pray for a battalion of angelic forces indicates that Jesus continued to pray while arrested, interrogated, flogged, maltreated, mocked, paraded before the mob, and finally on the cross. Besides, he had been praying not only before the arresting moment, but is making intercession for us now.  

(Hebrews 5:7) “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.”

(Hebrews 7:25) “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

(Romans 8:34) “who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”

 

How great it is that we have such an intercessor-king who effectively prays to the Father God on our behalf throughout the difficulties and uncertainties we have to face up to throughout our lives!

 

-Wrap-Up-

Let me sum up the characteristics of ‘Jesus’ Kingship’. What kind of King is Jesus Christ? He is: (1) Savior-King (2) Intercessor-King (3) Self-Restraining King (4) Eternal King. In a word, He is the most marvelous, most wonderful, most majestic, most magnificent SIRE. Now we are waiting for such a wonderful king to come again in this Christmas season. Hallelujah!

 

-Our Response to the Truth-

Pilate asked Jesus, “What is the truth?” (v. 38), when Jesus said that he came into this world to testify the truth. He did not wait for an answer because he did not look to his prisoner for information on the subject. Even though there is no record of Jesus’ answer, the following narrative of His death and resurrection is His answer in action. In other words, “This is what truth is and does. Truth is what Jesus is; and Jesus is dying for Barabbas, and for Israel, and for the world. And for you and me.” (N. T. Wright) What should be our response to this truth? Just as verse 37 indicates, “everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” It should be to listen to the truth in person, our glorious king, Jesus Christ. Let me share a story of a person who did so.

 

In “High Blue Ladder” written by Gong Ji-young, the true story of Brother Marinus is introduced. His real name is Leonard LaRue (1914-2001), who saved the most lives by a single ship in human history. During the Korean War in 1950, 14,000 people were rescued among those who had gathered at the pier during the Heungnam evacuation operation. As the captain of the 138.7-meter long and 7,600-ton cargo ship “Meredith Victory”, he boarded refugees on December 20-21, 1950, while the Chinese army advanced up to six kilometers from the pier. The people were shoved into the five-floor cargo compartment with no food, drink or toilet but only cold iron plates. At the moment when he thought he couldn't carry more, there was more space available like rubber, and the 12-passenger ship was able to carry so many people. December 24, Christmas Eve, was the day the refugees disembarked at the port of Geoje. During the voyage of a little over three days, not a single person died, but five babies were born in such an unbearable state. When he and his crew were all set to land at the port, they couldn't believe it. When the refugees disembarked, no one pressed their elbows on the person next to them, instead, yielded to the elderly and infirm in front of them, waiting for their turn in a dignifying manner. The residents of Geoje came out to the pier to welcome the refugees, preparing rice balls and clear fresh water. Did they have enough food for themselves? Thus, Captain LaRue witnessed the true Christmas unfolding in a place where there was no Jesus, no church, no cross.

 

Captain LaRue, who has already been touched by God's miracle, advanced to the next stage of discovering God's calling through this event. When the refugees disembarked at the port, he talked to a woman who gave birth to a child on Christmas Eve. When asked where she was going, she was in tears and had nothing to say. Then the woman said, “Captain, that girl standing over there has already lost her father at the Heungnam pier and has been swept up by people carrying her younger sister onto this boat. What will happen to that child? What will become of me and my son who has been born today? I fear life more than death.” Then the captain inadvertently placed his hand on her head and replied: “Lady, I promise. From today until my dying day, I will pray for you so that your life may never be more fearful than death. I promise you, lady.” At that moment, he realized that God wanted him not only to take the refugees to a safe land, but to pray for their lives for the rest of his life.

 

On Christmas Day, 1955, Captain LaRue made his first vow as a novice monk at St. Paul's Abbey in New Jersey, US, and then made a life vow on Christmas, 1959. From that time on he “prayed and worked” at the Abbey until his dying day. He kept his promise he had given to the woman. A more mysterious thing happened when the St. Paul's Monastery, where he was affiliated, was no longer able to operate due to the lack of monks, and it asked for help from the St. Benedict Waegwan Abbey located near Daegu. While the monks sent for consultation from Waegwan Monastery were expressing their disapproval, Captain LaRue or Monk Marinus, sent for them to share the story of miraculous Heungnam evacuation operation that had not been told to anyone. He passed away two days later. It goes without saying that the monks dispatched from Waegwan Monastery decided to take over the management of the Monastery. You know what? Thanks to Captain LaRue and the crew, we Koreans now have the incumbent president Moon Jan-in, because his parents and sister were rescued through the 'Meredith Victory'.

 

What should we respond to the eternal kingship of Jesus? Humble and thankful submission to His calling just as the Brother Marinus exemplified throughout his life! Let’s pray.

안녕하세요, 형제자매 여러분! 방탄소년단은 책을 많이 읽는 것으로 유명합니다. 그들이 가장 좋아하는 책 중 하나가 바로 독일 노벨상 수상자인 헤르만 헤세의 “데미안”입니다. 그 작품의 주제가 그들의 2집 앨범 "Wings"에 각색되었습니다. 그 책에서 가장 유명한 상징은 ‘알이나 지구를 깨고 나오는 새’로서, 자기를 둘러싼 선입관과 편견의 속박에서 해방된 진정한 자아를 나타냅니다. 위대한 상징이긴 하지만 오도된 상징이지요. 무엇보다도 영지주의적인 신인 ‘아브락사스’, 즉 이 세상의 선과 악을 죄다 품는다는 신에게로 날아간다는 잘못된 목표를 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 책 속에서 주인공 ‘싱클레어’는 수수께끼 같은 동급생이자 친구인 ‘데미안’에게 여러 가지 방식으로 자극을 받습니다. 데미안은 싱클레어의 마음 속에 카인과 아벨 이야기와 십자가에 달린 두 강도 이야기에 대한 이단적인 생각을 심어주려고 합니다. 그는 다음과 같이 주장하지요. 가인은 고귀한 사람이고 아벨은 겁쟁이다. 오늘 십자가에 달린 두 강도 중 한 사람을 친구나 신뢰할 수 있는 파트너로 선택해야 한다면, 그 사람은 확실히 울먹이는 개종자는 아닐 것이다. 그는 이전에 악행을 저질렀지만, 이제는 마음이 녹아버려 슬픔과 회개의 눈물 장면을 연출하고 있다! 무덤에서 두 걸음 정도 떨어진 상황에서 그러한 회개가 무슨 소용이 있겠는가? 그것은 달콤하긴 하지만 설득력은 없어 보이는 경건한 도덕 이야기 중 하나에 불과하다. 반면에 그 다른 범죄자는 진정한 성품을 갖추고 있다. 그는 개심을 경멸한 채 끝까지 자기의 길을 추구해 간다. 그야말로 가인의 후예다.

 

형제자매 여러분, 이 데미안의 이야기가 참으로 들리시나요? 십자가에 달린 두 강도에 대한 진짜 이야기를 한번 살펴보세요(누가복음 23:39-42). 그 가인의 후예는 예수 그리스도에게 모욕적인 언사를 일삼으면서, 불손하게 요구하지요. “당신이 그리스도가 아니냐? 너 자신과 우리를 구해 보라!” 그러나 울먹이는 개종자는 가인의 후예를 꾸짖으며, 이렇게 도전합니다. “네가 사형 선고를 받았는데도 하나님을 두려워하지 아니하느냐? 우리는 우리의 범죄로 죽어야 마땅하지만, 이 사람은 아무 잘못도 범하지 않았다.” 그러고는 그가 결정적인 말을 한 마디 덧붙입니다. 그게 뭔지 아십니까? “예수님, 주님의 나라에 임하실 때 저를 기억해 주십시오!” 얼마나 놀라운 고백인지요! 이 고백에 대해 예수 그리스도께서는, “내가 진실로 네게 이르노니, 오늘 네가 나와 ​​함께 낙원에 있으리라”라고 확언해 주셨습니다. 이 강도가 실행한 신앙고백의 특징이 무엇일까요? 그는 예수 그리스도를 구주로뿐 아니라 주님 혹은 왕으로 인정하고 있습니다. 이것이 바로 구원받는 믿음입니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도를 우리의 구주만이 아니라 주님과 왕으로 믿어야 합니다. 오만한 데미안과 불쌍한 싱클레어여! 예수 그리스도의 주권 또는 왕권이란 측면은 결코 그들이 당신 속에서 보기를 기대했던 것이 아니었지요.

 

-예수님은 어떤 왕이신가-

(1) 영원하신 왕

오늘 본문에 나오는 본디오 빌라도도 마찬가지입니다. 그는 예수 그리스도를 직접 만날 수 있는 흔치 않은 특권을 부여받았지만, 이 절호의 기회를 놓쳐 버렸습니다. 그는 예수님께 “네가 유대인의 왕이냐?”라든가 “진리가 무엇입니까?”라는 질문을 던지며, 예수님을 향한 비난이 사실인지 아닌지를 판단했습니다. 예수 그리스도께서 그에게 분명히 대답해 주셨지요. “네 말과 같이 내가 왕이니라 내가 이를 위하여 태어났으며 이를 위하여 세상에 왔나니 곧 진리에 대하여 증언하려 함이로라 무릇 진리에 속한 자는 내 음성을 듣느니라.”(37절) 그러나 그는 예수님의 말씀에 주의를 기울이지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 그는 그 답을 알고자 하는 진정한 욕망에서 이러한 질문을 하지 않았기 때문입니다. 자기 눈앞에 계신 분이 세상을 창조하시고 지속해 오셨을 뿐 아니라 장차 세상을 구원하실 진정한 우주의 왕 혹은 영원한 주님이시라는 점이 그의 뇌리를 스쳐 지나가지도 않았습니다. 다음 구절에서 창조주로서의 역할 때문에, 그리스도의 통치가 얼마나 포괄적인지 주목해 보세요.

 

(골로새서 1:15-17) 그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이시요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이시니 만물이 그에게서 창조되되 하늘과 땅에서 보이는 것들과 보이지 않는 것들과 혹은 왕권들이나 주권들이나 통치자들이나 권세들이나 만물이 다 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었고 또한 그가 만물보다 먼저 계시고 만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라

 

모든 것이 그리스도를 통해 창조되었고 그리스도를 위해 창조되었다는 점을 사도 바울은 무려 다섯 번이나 강조합니다. 바울은 '만물'의 범위가 포괄적이라는 것을 분명히 하기 위해, ‘하늘에 있는 것과 땅에 있는 것’을 명시적으로 포함시킨 다음 ‘보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것’을 나열합니다. 그리스도께서는 세상 모든 영역의 주가 되십니다.

 

(2) 구세주 되신 왕  

33절의 ‘그러므로’는 무엇을 의미할까요? 그 앞의 31-32절을 참조해 보세요. “빌라도가 이르되 너희가 그를 데려다가 너희 법대로 재판하라 유대인들이 이르되 우리에게는 사람을 죽이는 권한이 없나이다 하니 이는 예수께서 자기가 어떠한 죽음으로 죽을 것을 가리켜 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라 이에 빌라도가 다시 관정에 들어가 예수를 불러 이르되 네가 유대인의 왕이냐.” 종교 당국은 예수 그리스도께서 단지 죽기만을 바란 것이 아니라, 공식적으로 처형, 즉 십자가에 못 박히기를 원했습니다. 그들은 예수 그리스도를 사람들의 눈 앞에서 웃음거리로 만들려고 했습니다. 율법에 의하면 십자가형은 하나님의 저주의 표시였으므로(신명기 21:23), ‘십자가에 못 박힌 메시아’란 ‘사각형 원’이나 ‘조용한 아우성’과 같은 모순어법인 셈입니다. 형제 자매 여러분, 이 사실을 아시나요? 예수 그리스도께서는 '나무에 달려’ 죽으심으로써, “우리를 위하여 저주를 받은 바 되셨습니다”(갈라디아서 3:13). 당신은 십자가에서 우리가 율법을 어긴 것에 대한 하나님의 심판을 짊어지셨습니다. 십자가에 못 박히신 왕, 저주받으신 왕만이 우리의 중대한 필요를 충족시켜 주시고, 우리를 하나님 아버지와 화해시켜 주실 수 있는 유일한 메시아가 되십니다. 루터의 말대로입니다.

 

“자비로우신 우리 아버지께서는, 우리가 율법의 저주에 눌리고 압도당함을 보시고 우리의 힘으로는 결코 구원받을 수 없는 그 동일한 저주에 사로잡혀 있는 것을 보시고, 그 독생자를 세상에 보내시어 모든 사람들의 모든 죄를 그 위에 지우시며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 너는 부인하는 베드로가 되고, 박해자요, 신성모독자요, 잔인한 압제자인 바울이 되고, 간음한 다윗이 되고, 낙원에서 사과를 먹은 죄인이 되고, 십자가에 달린 그 도적이 되라. 간략하게 말하자면, 너는 모든 사람의 죄를 진 자가 되라. 그리하여 그것들을 위해 대가를 지불하고 그것들을 다 갚아라.”

 

그리고 우리의 구세주 되신 왕 예수 그리스도께서는 당신의 영원한 사랑으로 말미암아 우리의 영원한 구원을 위하여 ‘그것들을 다 갚으셨습니다’. (브루스 밀른) 당신께서는 십자가에서 희생적인 죽음을 당하시기 전에, 바라바라는 강도 혹은 폭도까지도 사형에서 구해내시기까지 하셨습니다.

 

(3) 자제하시는 왕

형제자매 여러분, 오늘 본문 말씀에서 ‘스타워즈’가 터질 것 같은 긴장된 분위기를 눈치채셨나요? 36절을 보세요. “내 나라는 이 세상에 속해 있지 않다. 만일 그렇다면, 내 종들이 싸워서 내가 유대인들에게 체포되지 않게 했을 것이다. 그러나 이제 내 나라는 다른 곳에 속해 있다”(NIV) 아마도 여러분들은 ‘다른 곳’ 즉 예수께서 친히 오신 하늘에서 비롯되는 종 된 천사들을 가리키는 다른 말씀(마태복음 26:53)이 기억날 것입니다.  

 

(마태복음 26:53-54) 너는 내가 내 아버지께 구하여 지금 열두 군단 더 되는 천사를 보내시게 할 수 없는 줄로 아느냐 내가 만일 그렇게 하면 이런 일이 있으리라 한 성경이 어떻게 이루어지겠느냐 하시더라

 

열두 군단이면 천사가 몇 명이나 될까요? 한 로마 군단이 6,000명의 군인으로 구성되어 있었으니, 이 말은 예수 그리스도께서 “체포되시는 순간에 72,000명의 천상 지원군”을 보내 주시도록 기도하는 것을 자제하셨다는 것을 의미합니다. “예수님께서 간구하시지 않은 기도” 덕분에 스타워즈를 피할 수 있었던 것이지요. “예수님께서 그 기도를 드리셨더라면 어떻게 되었을까요? 역사는 어떻게 바뀌었을까요? 예수님께서는 천상 구조 병력을 위해 기도하심으로써 악에 종지부를 찍고 모든 인류 역사를 끝낼 수 있었지만, 그렇게 하지 않기로 결정하셨습니다. 무력으로 승리를 거두는 대신에, 당신께서는 (당신과 우리 모두를 위해) 구속에 이르는 훨씬 더 힘든 길을 선택하셨습니다.” (필립 얀시)

 

자기들의 변덕과 소원에 따라 통치했던 수많은 왕들에 비하면 예수님은 완전히 다른 유형의 왕이십니다. “자기를 사랑하는 자 곧 자기의 뜻대로 부름 받은 자들에게 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루도록 하시는”(로마서 8:28) 자제하시는 왕이 우리에게 계신다는 것이 얼마나 큰 위안이 되는지요!  

 

(4) 중보하시는 왕

예수님께서 천사 병력을 위해 기도하지 않기로 선택하시는 자제력을 갖추고 계셨다는 측면은, 당신께서 체포되고, 심문받고, 채찍질 당하고, 학대받고, 조롱받고, 군중들 앞에서 행진하고, 마침내 십자가 상에 처한 상황 가운데서도 계속 기도하셨다는 것을 일러줍니다. 게다가 예수님께서는 체포되기 이전에도 기도하셨을 뿐만 아니라, 지금에도 우리를 위해 중보하고 계십니다.  

 

(히브리서 5:7) “그는 육체에 계실 때에 자기를 죽음에서 능히 구원하실 이에게 심한 통곡과 눈물로 간구와 소원을 올렸고 그의 경건하심으로 말미암아 들으심을 얻었느니라”

(히브리서 7:25) “그러므로 자기를 힘입어 하나님께 나아가는 자들을 온전히 구원하실 수 있으니 이는 그가 항상 살아 계셔서 그들을 위하여 간구하심이라”

(로마서 8:34) “누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”

 

우리가 일생 동안 직면해야 하는 어려움과 불확실한 상황 가운데서, 우리를 대신하여 아버지 하나님께 효과적으로 기도해 주시는 중보하시는 왕이 계신다는 것이 얼마나 멋진 일인지요!

-진리에 대한 우리의 응답-

예수님께서 진리를 증언하러 이 세상에 오셨다고 말씀하셨을 때, 빌라도는 예수님께 “진리가 무엇입니까?”라고 물었습니다(38절). 그는 그 주제에 대한 정보를 죄수 예수님에게서 찾지 않았기 때문에, 그 대답을 기다리지도 않았습니다. 비록 예수님의 응답에 대한 기록은 없지만, 이어지는 예수님의 죽으심과 부활에 대한 이야기 자체가 바로 살아 숨쉬는 당신의 응답입니다. 다시 말하자면, “이것이 바로 진리이고, 진리가 행하는 바이다. 진리란 예수님이시고, 예수님께서는 바라바와, 이스라엘과, 세상을 위해, 그리고 그대와 나를 위해 죽으신 것이다.” (N. T.  Wright) 이 진리에 대한 우리의 반응은 어떠해야 합니까? 37절이 밝히고 있는 대로입니다. “진리에 속한 자는 내 음성을 듣느니라” 우리의 반응은 인간이 되신 진리, 즉 우리의 영광스러운 왕 되신 예수 그리스도께 귀 기울이는 것이 되어야 합니다. 그렇게 실행한 사람의 이야기 한 자락을 나누겠습니다.

 

공지영 작가의 “높고 푸른 사다리”에 보면, 마리너스 형제의 실화가 소개됩니다. 그의 본명은 레너드 라루(1914-2001)로서, 인류 역사상 한 척의 배로 가장 많은 생명을 구한 사람입니다. 1950년 한국전쟁 당시에 흥남철수작전이 전개된 부두에 모인 사람들 중 14,000명이 구조되었습니다. 길이 138.7m이고 7,600톤에 달하는 ‘매러디스 빅토리’라는 화물선의 선장으로서, 그는 중공군이 그 부두 전방 6킬로미터까지 전진해 온 상황 가운데서 1950년 12월 20일과 21일에 피난민들을 태웠습니다. 사람들은 음식도, 마실 것도, 화장실도 없고, 다만 차가운 철판만 있는 5층짜리 화물칸 속으로 욱어넣어졌습니다. 더 이상은 태울 수 없다고 생각한 순간에, 마치 고무처럼 여유 공간이 생겨, 12인승인 그  배에 그렇게 많은 사람들을 실을 수가 있었습니다. 크리스마스 이브인 12월 24일이 바로 그 피난민들이 거제항에 상륙한 날이었습니다. 사흘이 조금 넘는 여정 동안 한 사람도 죽지 않았고, 도리어 그렇게 견딜 수 없는 상황 속에서 5명의 아기가 태어났습니다. 그와 선원들이 항구에 착륙할 채비를 마쳤을 때, 그들은 믿을 수가 없었습니다. 피난민들이 내릴 때 아무도 옆에 있는 사람을 팔꿈치로 찌르지 않고, 그 대신 앞에 있는 노인들과 병자들에게 양보하면서 품위 있는 자세로 자기 차례를 기다렸던 것입니다. 거제 주민들은 주먹밥과 맑은 물을 준비해서, 부두로 나와 피난민들을 환영해 주었습니다. 그들에게는 자신들을 위한 충분한 음식이 있었을까요? 이런 식으로 라루 선장은 예수님도, 교회도, 십자가도 없는 그곳에서 펼쳐지는 진정한 크리스마스를 목격했습니다.

 

이미 하나님의 기적에 감동을 받은 라루 선장은 이 사건을 통해 하나님의 부르심을 발견하는 다음 단계로 나아갔습니다. 난민들이 항구에 내릴 때, 그는 크리스마스 이브에 아이를 낳은 한 여성과 이야기를 나눴습니다. 어디로 가느냐는 질문에 그녀는 눈물을 흘리며 아무 말도 하지 못했습니다. 이윽고 그녀가 말했습니다. “선장님, 저기 서 있는 소녀는 이미 흥남 부두에서 아버지를 잃고, 사람들에 휩쓸려 여동생을 데리고 이 배에 올랐습니다. 그 아이는 어떻게 될까요? 저와 오늘 태어난 제 아들은 또 어떻게 될까요? 저는 죽음보다 삶이 더 두렵습니다.” 그러자 선장은 자기도 모르게 그녀의 머리에 손을 얹고 난 후 이렇게 대답했습니다. “여인이여, 약속합니다. 오늘부터 죽는 날까지 당신의 삶이 죽음보다 더 두렵게 되지 않도록 당신을 위해 기도할 것입니다. 여인이여, 약속할게요.” 그 순간 그는 하나님께서 그가 피난민들을 안전한 땅으로 데려갈 뿐만 아니라, 평생 동안 그들의 생명을 위해 기도하기를 원하신다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

 

1955년 성탄절에 라루 선장은 미국 뉴저지에 있는 성 바오로 수도원에서 신임 수도사로 첫 서원을 했고, 1959년 크리스마스에는 종신서원을 했습니다. 그때부터 그는 "기도하고 일했습니다". 그는 그 여인에게 한 약속을 지켰던 것입니다. 더 신비로운 일은 그가 소속되어 있던 성 바오로 수도원이 수도사 부족으로 더 이상 운영할 수 없게 되자, 대구 인근에 있는 성 베네딕토 왜관 수도원에 도움을 요청한 것입니다. 왜관에서 파견된 수도자들이 난색을 표하고 있을 때, 라루 선장 즉 마리너스 수사가 그들을 불러 그동안 누구에게도 말하지 않은 흥남 철수 작전의 기적에 대한 이야기를 나누었습니다. 그는 이틀 후 세상을 떠났습니다. 왜관에서 파견된 수도사들이 그 수도원을 운영하기로 결정한 것은 말할 나위도 없습니다. 여러분 이것을 아세요? 라루 선장과 승무원들 덕분에 우리 한국인들은 현재 문재인 대통령을 모시게 되었습니다. 그의 부모와 누나가 이 ‘메러디스 빅토리’를 통해 구조되었기 때문입니다.

 

우리는 예수님의 영원한 왕권에 대해 어떤 반응을 보여야 합니까? 마리너스 형제가 평생 동안 모범을 보인 것처럼 당신의 부르심에 귀 기울여 겸손하고 감사한 심령으로 순종하는 것입니다! 기도합시다. (끝)
