Longing for an Eternal Spring

 (Luke 2:25-35)

 

Good afternoon, brothers and sisters. Today’s message starts from my story. I was not able to experience the springtime for 21 years while I had been staying in Malaysia. Since it belongs to the tropical countries, Malaysia does not have anything as dramatic as the season called “spring” by temperate countries. Once in a while my family returned to Korea for a temporary period of time, but the period usually fell on summer season or winter season, because of the schedule of the university I had been working for. There were some places in Malaysia where I could experience some semblance of the autumn and even winter season against your expectations. In order to experience autumn, go to Cameron Highlands, located in the west-central region of Malaysian peninsula. It comprises a cool and chilly highland plateau with the elevation of 1,448 meters. You have to wear long sleeves and light jacket or jumper over there. As for the winter season, go to Mount Kinabalu in Sabah (east Malaysia), the tallest mountain in Malaysia (4,095 meters). Temperatures at its peak hovers between 0°C and -2°C, which are ideal for puddles of water to freeze and form ice sheets. However, the ice shouldn’t be mistaken for snow. So much for the taste of autumn and winter in Malaysia.

 

There was no semblance of the spring season wherever I went. Not a day passed that I didn’t miss the spring season. The arrival of spring brings the appearance of flowers. Early flowers are pushing through the earth, bursting forth their fragrance while leaves bud, birds build nests. All the mountains and fields are suddenly filled with life against all odds of a frosty winter world. I ached to relish the spring season until the time of our permanent return to my country in January, 2018. The springtime in that year touched me to the core. My heart was too full for words.

 

There was a man who had been waiting for another kind of springtime in his life. His name as Simeon described in Luke 2. He was waiting for the time when the Messiah or the anointed King would come to Israel and he would be able to see Him in person, not least because “The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.” (Luke 2:26, NLT) When Jesus Christ was brought to Jerusalem by His parents after the purification days were completed, Simeon was also led by the Holy Spirit into the temple. What a great rendezvous! At last he came to see Infant Jesus. That was his long-awaited springtime. He held Jesus Christ in his arms. He praised God, saying something. What do you expect him to say?

 

“Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, And the glory of Your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32, NASB)

 

In other words, now You allow me to die because I eyewitnessed Your Messiah or Your salvation. My faithful vigil or service is over. Salvation has already come! To whom has salvation come? Salvation for ‘all peoples’ is clarified as ‘revelation to the Gentiles’ (cf. Isaiah 49:6; 49:9) and ‘glory to your people Israel’ (cf. Isaiah 46: 13; 60: 1, 1 9). God’s salvation reaches the remotest corners of gentile territories as well as the land of Israel, just as a light penetrates any dark places in the world. At last the light has reached me in Youngdo, Busan, my hometown, one of the remotest areas in the Korean peninsula. I am sure that it is true of each of you joining today’s standing worship service. Hallelujah!

 

Simeon went on to say to Mary like this:

 

“This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”(34-35<NLT>)

 

In other words, this child will bring ‘many in Israel’ (v.34) to moral decision, thus some will have to face a point of collapse (‘falling’) and others a point of resurrection (‘rising’).

 

Seen in this way, Simeon brought forth the implications of Jesus Christ’s coming into this world. In terms of the universal nature of salvation, salvation has come to all the people in the world including each of us. Kingdom of God has already started off. A new era has already begun.

 

In terms of personal life, however, he is ready to depart from this world in peace, mainly because he saw Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, in person, even taking him in his own arms. To him, that is all there is to life. It was the greatest achievement, the most outstanding success, and the most wonderful blessing in his life. Isn’t his case true of ours? I don’t care whether I am rich or poor, physically fit or handicapped, intellectually bright or not, loved by people or not. So long as I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and worship Him with my heartiest praise and thanks, there is nothing I do bother in this world. I am content that I have achieved the most significant success in this life. Don’t think that I am saying these things because I am too old with grey hair. I mean it. I am still in the category of young people (18-65 years old) in terms of “UN’s New Age Classification”. Don’t be parochial! How about you, brothers and sisters?

 

Simeon and I will be able to meet each other face-to-face in the new heaven and earth. Over there we will enjoy “Eternal morning, eternal freshness, eternal springtime”. Don’t misunderstand my point. I am not referring to some sort of ‘life after death’. When I die, I will go to the Lord and stay with Him. That is the ‘life after death’. Even though it will be a precious and blessed state, it will be just a temporary or interim period of time. That is not what I am looking forward to enjoying. Are you wondering what it is? It is the “life after ‘life after death’” (N. T. Wright). A new bodily resurrected life in the new heaven and earth. Brother and sisters, if you have already longed for this “life after ‘life after death’”, i.e. our eternal springtime, we are fellow kingdom citizens. My heartiest congratulations to you! 안녕하세요, 형제 자매 여러분. 오늘의 메시지는 제 이야기에서 시작됩니다. 제가 말레이시아에 21년간 머무는 기간 동안, 봄을 경험할 수가 없었습니다. 말레이시아는 열대 지방에 속하기 때문에, 온대 국가에서 '봄'이라고 부르는 계절만큼 극적인 계절이 없습니다. 가끔 제 가족들이 잠시 한국에 돌아오긴 했지만, 제가 다니던 대학의 일정으로 인해 대개 여름이나 겨울에 그 기간이 잡혔습니다. 말레이시아에는 여러분의 기대와는 달리 가을과 겨울의 흥취를 느낄 수 있는 곳이 몇 군데 있긴 합니다. 가을을 맛보려면, 말레이시아 반도 중서부에 위치한 ‘카메론 하이랜드’로 가면 됩니다. 그곳은 해발 1,448m에 위치한 곳으로서 시원하고 쌀쌀한 고원 지대를 이루고 있습니다. 거기에서는 긴 소매옷과 가벼운 재킷이나 점퍼를 입어야 합니다. 겨울 시즌을 맛보려면, 말레이시아에서 가장 높은 산(4,095m)인 동말레이시아 사바 주의 ‘키나발루’산으로 가보면 됩니다. 정상의 온도가 0°C에서 -2°C 사이를 유지하니까 물웅덩이가 얼고 빙상을 형성하기에는 이상적입니다. 그러나 얼음을 눈으로 착각해서는 안 됩니다. 말레이시아의 가을과 겨울의 정취는 딱 거기까지였습니다.

 

어디를 가도 봄기운이 느껴지지 않았지요. 봄을 그리워하지 않은 날이 단 하루도 없었습니다. 봄이 오면 꽃이 피어나지요. 일찍 모습을 드러내는 꽃들은 땅을 비집고 나오면서 향기를 뿜어 대고, 잎들은 싹을 틔우고 새는 둥지를 짓습니다. 모든 산과 들판이 혹한의 겨울 세계의 모든 역경에 맞서서 갑자기 생명으로 가득 차게 됩니다. 2018년 1월에 저희가 영구 귀국할 때까지 봄을 만끽하고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같았습니다. 그해 봄은 제 가슴 속 깊숙이 와 닿았습니다. 제 마음이 너무 충만해져서 말로 표현할 수 없을 정도였으니까요.  

 

인생에서 또 다른 종류의 봄날을 기다리던 남자가 한 사람 있었습니다. 그의 이름은 시므온으로서 방금 읽은 누가복음 2장 본문에 묘사되어 있습니다. 그는 메시야 혹은 기름 부음받은 왕이 이스라엘에 나타나 그분을 직접 볼 수 있는 때를 기다리고 있었습니다. 무엇보다 특히 “성령께서 그가 주님의 메시야를 보기 전에는 죽지 않을 것이라고 알려 주셨기 때문입니다.” (누가복음 2:26, ​​NLT) 마리아가 정결 예식 기간을 마친 후에 예수 그리스도께서 부모에게 안겨 예루살렘에 들어오게 되었을 때, 시므온도 성령의 인도를 받아 성전으로 들어갔습니다. 얼마나 위대한 만남이었을까요! 마침내 그가 아기 예수를 만나게 된 것입니다. 그것이 바로 그가 오랫동안 기다리던 봄날이었습니다. 그는 예수 그리스도를 팔에 안았습니다. 그는 무언가를 읊조리면서 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 그가 무슨 말을 했을까요?

다시 말하자면 이런 얘기였지요. 이제 내가 하나님의 메시야 또는 주님의 구원을 목격했기 때문에 하나님께서 내가 죽도록 허락해 주시는군요. 내가 감당해야 할 충실한 경계임무나 섬김이 이제 끝났군요. 구원은 이미 도래했으니까요! 구원이 누구에게 도래했을까요? ‘만민’을 위한 구원은 ‘이방인들을 위한 계시’(참조, 이사야 49:6, 49:9)와 ‘주의 백성 이스라엘의 영광’(참조, 이사야 46:13; 60:1, 19)으로 명시되어 있습니다. 하나님의 구원은 마치 빛이 세상의 모든 어두운 곳을 관통하는 것처럼, 이스라엘 땅은 물론 이방인의 땅의 가장 먼 구석에도 미쳤던 것입니다. 드디어 한반도에서 가장 외진 곳 중 하나인, 제 고향 부산 영도까지 그 구원의 빛이 닿았습니다. 오늘 서서 찬양하는 예배 시간에 참석하시는 여러분 모두에게도 이러한 구원의 역사가 미쳤음을 확신합니다. 할렐루야!

 

시므온은 계속해서 마리아에게 이렇게 말합니다.

 

“이 아이는 이스라엘 중 많은 사람의 패함(fall)과 또 많은 사람들의 흥함(rise)의 원인이 될 운명을 갖고 태어났습니다. 하나님의 표적으로 보냄받았지만, 많은 사람들이 그를 반대하게 될 것입니다. 그 결과, 많은 사람들의 심정 속에 있는 가장 깊은 생각들이 드러나게 될 것입니다. 그리고 칼이 그대의 영혼을 관통하게 될 것입니다.”(2:34-35, NLT)

 

다시 말해서, 이 아이는 ‘이스라엘 중 많은 사람’(34절)이 도덕적 결정을 하도록 이끌게 될 것이라는 점입니다. 그리하여 어떤 사람들은 붕괴의 지점(‘패함’)에, 어떤 사람들은 부활의 지점(‘흥함’)에 직면해야 한다는 것이지요.

 

이렇게 본다면, 시므온은 예수 그리스도께서 이 세상에 오신다는 것 속에 내포된 의미를 제시한 셈입니다. 구원의 보편성의 관점에서 보자면, 구원은 우리 각자를 포함하여 세상 모든 사람에게 임한 것입니다. 하나님의 나라는 이미 시작되었습니다. 새로운 시대가 이미 시작된 것이지요.

 

그러나 개인적인 삶의 관점에서 보자면, 시므온은 세상의 구세주되신 예수 그리스도를 직접 뵙고 친히 당신을 품에 안기까지 했기 때문에 이제 이 세상을 떠날 준비가 되어 있었습니다. 그에게는 그것이 자기 삶의 전부였습니다. 그것은 그의 인생에서 가장 위대한 성취이자, 가장 주목할 만한 성공이자, 가장 놀라운 축복이었습니다. 그의 경우가 바로 우리의 경우에도 적용되지 않습니까? 저는 제가 부자이든 가난하든, 신체적으로 건강하든 장애를 갖고 있든, 지적으로 똑똑하든 그렇지 않든, 사람들에게 사랑받든 그렇지 않든 상관하지 않습니다. 다만 예수 그리스도를 제 주님과 구주로 영접하고 진심 어린 찬양과 감사로 당신을 경배할 수만 있다면, 이 세상에서 제가 진실로 고민하는 일이란 존재하지 않습니다. 제 생애 속에서 가장 의미 있는 성공을 거둔 것에 만족하고 있습니다. 제가 백발을 하고 나이가 너무 든 늙은이여서 이런 말을 하고 있다고 생각하지 마시기 바랍니다. 진심입니다. 저는 “새로운 UN의 연령 분류”에 따르자면, 여전히 청년(18-65세)의 범주에 속해 있습니다. 너무 편협해지지 마세요! 형제 자매 여러분은 어떻습니까?

 

시므온과 저는 새 하늘과 새 땅에서 얼굴을 맞대고 만날 수 있을 것입니다. 그곳에서 우리는 “영원한 아침, 영원한 신선함, 영원한 봄”(C.
