그리스도교의 복음

우리나라에는 무신론자들이 많습니다. 절반 이상이나 됩니다. 그렇지만 전 세계적으로 보면 무신론자는 절대 소수입니다. 전체 인구 80억 중에 9억(11%)밖에 되지 않으니까요. 그만큼 종교를 믿는 이들이 많다는 말입니다. 종교는 두 가지 종류가 있습니다. 첫째, 인간의 호기심과 두려움에서 비롯된 것입니다. 인간이라면 누구나 자기 존재의 근원과 이 세상에 존재하는 가치의 원천을 찾고 그리워하는 마음을 품고 있습니다. 게다가 자연 속에서 아무런 보호도 없이 사는 인간은 천재지변이 무서웠고, 죽음 이후가 두렵기도 했습니다. 그래서 초자연적인 존재를 설정하고, 그를 숭배하기도 하고 달래기도 했습니다. 둘째, 인간이 신의 음성을 들었다는 종교가 있습니다. 이 세상을 창조하고 운행하는 신이 자기가 어떤 존재이고 자기의 뜻이 무엇인지 인간에게 전하기 위해서, 특정한 사람들을 선택한 경우입니다. 기독교는 후자에 속합니다.

 

지금부터 4,000여 년 전에 그 신, 즉 하나님이 지금 이락 땅에 살던 아브라함에게 나타났습니다. 여러 가지 우상을 숭배하던 그 땅을 떠나 자기가 지시하는 땅으로 가라고 했습니다. 하나님의 음성을 듣고 순종한 아브라함이 그곳을 떠나 정착한 곳이 바로 가나안 땅입니다. 하나님은 자기의 음성에 순종한 아브라함을 통해 전 세계 모든 민족이 복을 받도록 계획했습니다. 그것은 그의 후손 중 예수 그리스도를 통한 구원이었습니다. 그의 탄생 시점이 인류 역사의 기원이 되었습니다. 그는 30세부터 3년 반 동안 공생애를 영위하면서, 주로 제자들을 키우고, 복음을 전파하며, 사람들의 다양한 필요들을 채워주었습니다. 자신이 이 세상을 구원하기 위해 온 하나님의 아들이라는 것을 제자들이 알 수 있도록 다양한 기적을 행했습니다. 이런 주장을 받아들이지 않았던 종교 지도자들에 의해 그는 십자가형으로 죽임을 당합니다. 그러나 그는 사흘 만에 부활함으로써, 자신이 하나님의 아들로서 세상의 구원을 완벽하게 이루었다는 것을 열어 밝혔습니다. 부활한 그는 40일간 제자들이 자신의 부활을 확신하도록 돕고, 하나님의 나라에 관한 일들을 가르치다가 승천했습니다. 그리하여 하늘과 땅의 모든 권능을 온전히 행사하는 주님이 되었습니다. 장차 예수 그리스도는 이 시대의 마지막 날에 이 땅으로 돌아와, 온 세상을 심판하고 새 하늘과 새 땅을 열 것입니다.

 

예수가 가르친 복음은 어떤 내용일까요? 그 핵심은 ‘경천애인’입니다. 하나님을 전인적으로 사랑하고 이웃을 자기처럼 사랑하라는 것이지요. 인간의 모든 문제는 이 핵심 원리를 어긴 데서 비롯됩니다. 인간이 겪는 모든 분쟁은 창조주 하나님을 무시하거나 경배하지 않고, 이웃을 자기처럼 사랑하지 않는 데서 생겼습니다. 부모를 통해 자신을 빚은 하나님 대신 다른 대상을 추구하면서 자기 유익을 우선하는 자기중심적인 삶 말입니다. 이런 무도하고 몰인정한 면모의 중심에는 인간의 교만과 탐욕이 자리 잡고 있습니다. 이 문제를 해결하려면 먼저 그 교만과 탐욕이 하나님께 죄악인 것을 인정하고 참회해야 합니다. 그 보편적인 원리와 이웃도 하나님에게서 비롯되었기 때문입니다. 참회의 대가로 무엇을 지불해야 할까요? 하나님의 아들인 예수가 자기 대신 십자가에서 죽고 부활했다는 것을 믿고, 그가 자기의 주님 되심을 입으로 시인해야 합니다. 그러면 죄악을 다 용서받고, 하나님의 영이 내주함으로써 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다. 그 순간부터 새로운 생명 혹은 영생이 시작됩니다.

 

영생의 핵심은 하나님 혹은 예수와 끊임없이 접속되어 그를 사랑하고 즐기는 것입니다. 그것에는 개인적인 차원도 있고, 공동체적인 차원도 있습니다. 다른 하나님의 자녀들과 한 몸을 이루어 함께 하나님을 사랑하고, 서로 사랑하는 것이 바로 그 차원입니다. 이 공동체는 예수를 대변하고 예수의 뜻을 대행하는 역할을 감당합니다. 그 안에서 각자의 몫을 찾아 예수와 세상을 섬겨야 합니다. 그러던 중 죽음을 맞이하게 됩니다. 그러면 하나님께로 가서 하나님과 함께 있게 되지요. 비록 그 상태가 영광스럽긴 하지만, 그것은 일시적이고 잠정적일 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그 “‘죽음 이후의 삶’ 이후의 삶”이 곧 펼쳐질 것이기 때문입니다. 그것이 바로 “새 하늘과 새 땅에서 누릴, 육체로 부활한 새 생명”입니다. 예수가 십자가 죽음 후에 부활함으로써 선보인 바로 그 생명입니다. 이것이 우리가 고대하는 진정한 소망입니다. 할렐루야!

The Christian Gospel   

There are many atheists in this country—more than half of the population. However, on a global scale, atheists are a minority. Approximately 900 million people, or about 11% of the world's 8 billion population, identify as atheists. This indicates that the vast majority of people around the world hold religious beliefs. Broadly speaking, religion can be divided into two types. The first type emerges from human curiosity and fear. Humans have a deep desire to understand the source of our existence and the foundation of our values. Additionally, living in a natural world without protection, they feared natural disasters and the unknown aspects of death, leading them to create and worship supernatural beings. The second type involves the belief that humans have heard the voice of God-the God who created and governs the world. In this view, God chooses specific individuals to reveal His identity and communicate His will to humanity. Christianity falls into this latter category.

 

More than 4,000 years ago, God appeared to Abraham, who was living in what is now Iraq. God instructed him to leave his homeland, where he worshiped many idols, and travel to a land that God would show him. Abraham obeyed, leaving his home and settling in Canaan. God’s plan was to bless all nations through Abraham, who faithfully obeyed Him. This blessing would come through one of Abraham's descendants, Jesus Christ. Jesus’ birth marked a pivotal point in human history. He lived a public life for three and a half years from the age of 30, during which he raised disciples, preached the gospel, and met the various needs of the people. He performed many miracles to demonstrate that he was the Son of God, sent to save the world. Despite these miracles, religious leaders who rejected his claim had him crucified. However, on the third day, he rose from the dead, confirming that he was the Son of God and had fully accomplished the salvation of the world. After his resurrection, he spent 40 days strengthening his disciples' faith in his resurrection, teaching them the things concerning the kingdom of God, and then ascended to heaven, where he now exercises all power in heaven and on earth as Lord. Jesus Christ will return on the last day of this age to judge the world and usher in the new heaven and earth .

 

So, what is the gospel that Jesus taught? At its core, it is: "Fear God and love people." All of humanity's problems arise from violating this core principle—to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Our conflicts result from ignoring and betraying this universal principle, failing to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is a self-centered life, where we prioritize personal gain and chase after things other than God, the One who created us through our parents. At the heart of this unrighteous and unloving attitude are human pride and greed. To solve this problem, we must first recognize that our pride and greed are sinful before God and repent of them, because both the universal principle and our neighbor originate from God. What does repentance entail? It involves believing that Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross in our place and rose from the dead, confessing him as our Lord. Through this belief and confession, our sins are forgiven, and we become children of God, indwelt by God's Spirit. From that moment on, a new life, or eternal life, begins.

 

The key to eternal life is maintaining a constant connection with God, or Jesus, loving and enjoying Him. This connection has both personal and communal dimensions. It involves being part of a body of believers, loving God together, and loving each other. This community represents Jesus and acts according to His will. Within this community, we each find our part, serving Jesus and the world. Eventually, when we die, we go to be with God. Even though that life will be glorious, it is only temporary and provisional, because our ultimate hope is “life after ‘life after death’”—a new bodily resurrected life in the new heaven and earth. This is the very life that Jesus demonstrated through His resurrection after His death on the cross. This is the true hope we look forward to. Hallelujah!
