Fix Your Eyes on Jesus in Your Race

(Hebrews 12:1-3)

 

-Introduction-

Good afternoon, Brothers and Sisters! Some of you might have been surprised last week to hear that today would be my last day in GEM worship service. There is no long story to make short, but I have been a 'substitute' pastor for last nine months. Time is just up. It’s the time to move on to next fresh adventures and challenges for you as well as for me. Brothers and Sisters, however, let me tell you that I cannot replace this great privilege to have learned and worked with you with any other valuable opportunities.

 

Brothers and Sisters, have you watched this movie: “End of the Spear” (2005)? This movie recounts the story of Operation Auca, in which 5 American missionaries attempted to evangelize the Huaorani (Waodani) people of the tropical rain forest of Eastern Ecuador. It is based on actual events from 1956 in which these 5 male missionaries (i.e. Ed McCully, Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Pete Fleming, and Roger Youderian) were speared to death by a group of the Waodani tribe, even though they could have killed their attackers by their guns. The movie tells the story from the perspective of Steve Saint (the son of Nate Saint) & Mincayani, one of the people who took part in the attack. 

 

These martyrs have been respected by many Christians since then, and they must have been included among ‘so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us’ (v. 1) in today’s passage. They are supposed to inspire us in the midst of adversarial circumstances facing our faith. But Steve Saint had a different idea about them for many years. “The murders were capricious, an accident of bad timing. (…) Couldn’t there have been another way? It made little impact on the Aucas that I could see. To them it was just one more killing in a history of killing.” When he visited Timbuktu, a historical city of Mali, however, he experienced a turning point in his journey of faith by the encounter of a Malian MBB (i.e. Muslim Background Believer). His name was 'Nouh Ag Infa Yatara', who had been thrown out of his family, condemned as an outcast, because of his new faith in Jesus Christ. His mother tried to kill him by poisoning his food, and yet he wasn’t affected at all, but his brother was partially paralyzed after stealing a piece of deadly meat.  

 

Steve asked Nouh the question which he had wanted to ask his father: “Why is your faith so important to you that you’re willing to give up everything, perhaps even your life?” Nouh replied: “I know God loves me and I’ll live with Him forever. I know it! Now I have peace where I used to be full of fear and uncertainty. Who wouldn’t give up everything for this peace and security?” When he went on to ask Nouh where his courage came from, Nouh replied that he was inspired by some books about other Christians who had suffered for their faith. His favorite book was regarding 5 young men who willingly putting their lives in jeopardy to evangelize the stone age Indians in the jungles of South America. He was much more touched by the fact that these men let them be speared to death, although they had guns to kill the attackers. When Steve listened to this story, he couldn’t but confess that he was the son of Nate Saint the pilot. Nouh cried, “Your father? The story was true!”

 

“Nouh and I had gifts for each other that no one else could give. I gave him the assurance that the story that had given him courage was true. He gave me the assurance that God had used Dad’s death for good. Dad, by dying, had helped give Nouh a faith worth dying for. And Nouh, in return, had helped give Dad’s faith back to me.”

 

-Context-

The author of this letter (i.e. Hebrews) is not known, but the author’s purpose is clear. His readers, who consisted of Jewish believers, were facing two temptations. On one hand, they were confused theologically about the significance of their ethnic identity and religious traditions such as angels, Moses and Joshua, the priests, the covenant, the sanctuary, and sacrifices. On the other hand, they were facing insult and persecution instigated by unbelieving Jews and Gentiles. Since they were branded as heretics, they must have been deserted by their extended families, expelled from their synagogues, and lost their jobs. Under these circumstances, the author faces them with this burning question: "Is Jesus Christ worth it all?" Then he persuaded them that the answer is yes. He proceeds to remind and convince readers of the superiority of Jesus Christ and of the new covenant, warn them of the danger of turning away from Christ or apostasy, and exhort them to faithful endurance. 

 

-Focus on the Race-

The great cloud of witnesses in chapter 11 are not spectators in an amphitheater, cheering us on in the race of faith, bur rather they are witnesses (Gk. martyres) of true faith for us because God ‘witnessed’ (11:2, 4–5, 39) to their faith in the pages of the Bible. Given these circumstances, the author begins the chapter with the image of a race in order to exhort his readers to “run with endurance,” laying aside impediments to endurance and keeping a focus on Jesus as the pacesetter. In the original Greek text, there is only one exhortation in the verses 1-2a as follows: Let us run.

-How to Run the Race Well-

The Christian life is less a short sprint than a marathon. What should we do to run the race with effectiveness and success? The author suggests three things in particular by using the familiar metaphor of race: (1) Lay aside all that hinders and sin, (2) Endure, and (3) Fix our eyes on Jesus. Who is Jesus Christ in this passage?

 

■Jesus the compassionate man: Christ’s human name, ‘Jesus’

■Jesus the victorious pioneer: ‘the author of faith’ = the pathfinder or trail-blazer of faith

■Jesus the only perfecter: ‘the perfecter of faith’ = Jesus is faith’s only consummator.

■Jesus the devoted servant: ‘Instead of the joy set before him he endured the cross.’

■Jesus the effective priest: ‘has sat down in the heavens’ <------ “When He had made purification  of sins, He sat  down  at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” (1:3)

■Jesus the enthroned Lord: He is at ‘the throne of God’.

■Jesus the patient sufferer: They must ‘consider Him’ lest they become weary and lose heart.

Brothers ans Sisters! Why don’t we memorize these verses and meditate on them day and night to remind ourselves of the multifaceted greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ who empowers us to endure to the end?

 

-A Plea for Lifelong Growth-

I believe in lifelong learning. Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, set the tone for our life in that way.

 

(Luke 2:40, 52) The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. (…) And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

 

Growth is the touchstone of a good life or a good Christian life. I think that all of us need to be students or learners during our lifetime. If you are ‘younger’ students, I am an ‘older’ student. I have delivered sermons each week as one student to another, talking about difficult but significant questions I have encountered, or lights I have gained, when reading the Bible. I have had the hope, however, that one way or another these sermons might interest, and sometimes even help, other students like you (C. S. Lewis). Brothers and Sisters, let me make it clear that I have been ‘comparing notes’ with you, not presuming to instruct you. It does not necessarily mean that I preached sermons in a flippant manner, but rather in a careful and thoughtful way. Richard Baxter, a Puritan preacher, said the exactly same thing as I would rather confess: “I preached as never sure to preach again / And as a dying man to dying men.” Brothers and Sisters, continue to grow, following the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, until your dying day! That’s my parting wish for you.

 

-A Thank-You Note to ‘Behind-the-Scene’ ‘Mission Partners’-

Brothers and Sisters, do you know what this musical instrument is? It is 2 meters tall and difficult to transport, and only its player has to stand when the symphony orchestra is playing. Moreover, Its sound cannot be heard during the symphony performance. It is said that the symphony orchestra does not need a conductor, but this musical instrument is indispensable to it. This instrument plays the role of providing the foundation for all the sounds in the symphony orchestra, just like the foundation stone laid under the building in construction. Since there is a soft note of this instrument, the optimal sounds of various instruments can be produced in an orchestra, just like drawing multiple colors on white paper. (Lee Eo-Ryeong) Take a look around us. How many contrabasses are supporting our GEM, church, and society? Violinists, especially first violinists! Realize who is supporting your voice, and humbly thank those contrabasses around you.

 

This situation holds true for me. During last nine months, I have hogged the limelight in every worship service, while there are many workers who do their own duties faithfully and secretly. In Matthew 6 where Jesus gave a warning to those who do almsgiving, prayer, and fasting to be seen and honored by men, He clearly said, “they have their reward in full.” (Matthew 6:2, 5, 16) On the other hand, to those who do these activities in secret, He unequivocally said, “your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:4, 6, 18) At the eleventh hour of my ministry, I deeply thank you, ‘Behind-the-Scene Mission Partners’, for your painstaking and sacrificial serving you have conducted thus far. I pray that God our Father may reward you with what He promised to the faithful servants: “WDGFS Award”, “‘Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant’ Award”! Last but not least, I would like to thank you, all GEMites, for your moral support to and practical participation in the GEM events and activities. I will miss you, Brothers and Sisters. 안녕하세요, 형제자매 여러분! 여러분 중에는 지난 주에 오늘이 바로 제가 영어예배부 예배를 참석하는 마지막 날이 될 것이라는 소식을 듣고 놀라신 분들이 좀 계셨을 것입니다. 짧게 할 만한 긴 이야기는 없습니다. 다만 지난 9개월 동안 제가 ‘땜빵’ 목회자였다는 말씀을 드립니다. 이제 시간이 다 되었군요. 여러분과 저를 위해 마련된 새로운 모험과 도전을 향해 나아갈 때입니다. 그렇지만 형제자매 여러분, 여러분과 함께 배우고 일할 수 있었던 이 큰 특권을 다른 어떤 귀중한 기회와도 바꿀 수 없다는 말씀을 드립니다.

 

형제자매 여러분, "창의 끝"(2005)이라는 영화를 보신 적이 있습니까? 이 영화는 5명의 미국인 선교사들이 에콰도르 동부 열대 우림 지역의 후아오라니(와오다니) 족에게 복음을 전하려고 시도한 오퍼레이션 아우카에 대한 이야기를 들려줍니다. 이 영화는 1956년 이 5명의 남성 선교사들(즉 에드 맥컬리, 짐 엘리옷, 네이트 세인트, 핏 플레밍 및 로저 유더리안)이 비록 자기들의 총으로써 와오다니 부족의 공격자 한 그룹을 죽일 수 있었지만, 도리어 그들에게 창에 찔려 살해 당한 실제 사건을 기반으로 합니다. 이 영화는 스티브 세인트(네이트 세인트의 아들)와 그 공격에 가담한 민카야니의 관점에서 이야기를 풀어 나가지요.

이 편지(즉 히브리서)의 저자는 알려지지 않았지만, 저자의 목적은 분명합니다. 유대인 신자들로 구성된 그의 독자들은 두 가지 시험에 직면하고 있었습니다. 한편으로는 민족적 정체성과, 천사, 모세, 여호수아, 제사장, 언약, 성소 및 제사들과 같은 종교적 전통의 의미에 대해 신학적으로 어리둥절한 상태에 놓여 있었습니다. 다른 한편으로는 믿지 않는 유대인들과 이방인들에게 모욕과 핍박을 받고 있었습니다. 이단으로 낙인 찍힌 채, 분명히 대가족에게 버림받고, 회당에서 쫓겨나고, 직장도 잃었을 것입니다. 이러한 상황하에서 저자는 그들에게 다음과 같이 선명하고 강렬한 질문을 던집니다. “예수 그리스도가 과연 그 모든 것을 걸 만한 가치가 있는가?” 그런 다음 그는 그 대답이 참이 된다고 그들을 설득했습니다. 그는 계속해서 독자들에게 예수 그리스도와 새로운 언약의 우월성을 상기시키고 확신시키면서, 그들에게 그리스도께로부터 방향을 바꾸어 사라지는 위험, 즉 배교의 위험을 경고하면서, 그들에게 신실하게 인내할 것을 권고합니다.

 

-인생 경주에 집중하라-

11장에 나오는 구름같이 많은 증인들은 믿음의 경주에 임하고 있는 우리를 응원하는 원형경기장의 구경꾼이 아니라, 하나님께서 성경 곳곳에서 ‘증거하셨기’(11:2, 4-5, 39) 때문에 우리를 위한 참된 믿음에 대해 증거하는 증인들(헬라어로 마르티레스)입니다. 이러한 상황을 감안하면서, 저자는 독자들에게 인내의 장애물을 제쳐두고 선두 주자이신 예수님께 초점을 맞추면서 “인내로 경주하라”라고 권면하기 위해 경주의 이미지로 이 12장을 시작하고 있습니다. 헬라어 원문에는 아래와 같이1절에서 2절 상반절 속에 단 하나의 권고만 있을 뿐입니다. 즉 경주하자입니다. -경주에서 잘 달리는 방법-

그리스도인의 삶은 짧은 단거리 경주라기보다는 마라톤입니다. 효과적이고 성공적으로 경주를 하려면 어떻게 해야 합니까? 저자는 경주라는 친숙한 비유를 사용하여 특별히 세 가지를 제안합니다. (1) 모든 방해거리와 죄를 벗어 버리라 (2) 인내하라 (3) 우리의 시선을 예수님께 고정하라. 이 본문에서 예수 그리스도는 어떤 분이신가요?

 

■자비로운 사람 예수님: 그리스도의 인간 이름인 ‘예수’에 주목하세요.

■승리하신 개척자 예수님: ‘믿음의 창시자’, 즉 믿음의 길잡이 혹은 개척자이십니다.

■온전케 하시는 유일하신 분 예수님: ‘믿음을 온전케 하시는 분’, 즉 예수님만이 믿음의 완성자이십니다.

■헌신적인 종 예수님: ‘그 앞에 있는 기쁨 대신에 십자가를 참으셨습니다.’

■유능하신 제사장 예수님: ‘하늘에 앉으셨습니다’ <------- “죄를 정결하게 하는 일을 하시고 높은 곳에 계신 지극히 크신 이의 우편에 앉으셨습니다.”(1:3)

■보좌에 않으신 주 예수님: ‘하나님의 보좌’에 계십니다.

■고난을 인내하시는 분 예수님: 지치고 낙심하지 않도록 당신을 ‘생각’해야 합니다.

형제자매 여러분! 이 구절을 암송하고 밤낮으로 묵상함으로써 우리가 끝까지 견디도록 힘을 부어 주시는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 다면적인 위대하심을 상기하는 것이 어떻겠습니까?

 

-평생 성숙을 도모하라는 간청-

저는 평생 학습을 믿습니다. 우리의 주님이시며 하나님이신 예수 그리스도께서 우리 삶의 기조를 그런 식으로 정해 두셨기 때문입니다.

 

(누가복음 2:40, 52) 그 아이는 계속해서 자라고 강해지며 지혜가 자랐습니다. 그리고 하나님의 은혜가 그 위에 있었습니다. (…) 그리고 예수님께서는 계속해서 그 지혜와 키가 자라가며 하나님과 사람에게 더욱 사랑스러워 가셨습니다. (NASB)

 

무릇 성장이란 것은 훌륭한 삶 혹은 훌륭한 그리스도인이 영위해 가는 삶의 시금석입니다. 저는 우리 모두가 평생 동안 학생이나 학습자가 되어야 한다고 생각합니다. 여러분이 ‘좀 더 젊은’ 학생이시라면, 저는 ‘좀 더 나이 많은’ 학생입니다. 저는 한 학생으로서 그동안 성경을 읽으면서 직면했던 어렵지만 중요한 질문들이나 얻은 교훈들에 대해 매주 다른 학생들에게 설교한 셈입니다. 그렇지만 저는 이 설교가 어떤 식으로든 여러분과 같은 다른 학생들에게 흥미를 주고 때로는 도움이 되기를 소망했습니다. 형제자매 여러분, 제가 한 것은 ‘의견을 교환한 것’이지 주제넘게 여러분을 훈계하기 위한 것이 아니었음을 명토 박아 둡니다. 그 말은 제가 설교를 경솔하게 했다는 의미가 아니라, 신중하고 사려 깊게 설교했다는 뜻입니다. 청교도 설교자인 리처드 백스터가 바로 제가 고백하고 싶은 것과 똑같은 말을 했습니다. “나는 결코 다시는 설교할 수 있으리라는 확신이 없는 것처럼 설교했다 / 그리고 죽어 가는 자가 죽어 가는 사람들에게 말하는 것처럼 설교했다.” 형제자매 여러분, 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 생애가 다하는 날까지 계속 성장하십시오! 그것이 제가 여러분과 작별하면서 품고 있는 소원입니다.

 

-‘보이지 않는 곳에서 사역하는’ ‘선교 동역자들’께 드리는 감사-

형제자매 여러분, 이 악기가 무엇인지 아십니까? 높이가 2미터에 달해 운반이 어렵고, 교향악단이 연주할 때 그 악기 연주자만 서 있어야 합니다. 게다가 교향곡 연주 중에는 그 소리가 들리지 않습니다. 교향악단에 지휘자는 필요 없지만, 이 악기는 없어서는 안 될 존재라는 말이 있습니다. 이 악기는 마치 건설 중인 건물 아래에 기초석이 놓이는 것처럼, 교향악을 연주하는 오케스트라에서 그 모든 소리의 토대를 제공하는 역할을 합니다. 이 악기의 부드러운 음이 있기 때문에 마치 백지에 여러 색을 그리는 것처럼 다양한 악기가 품은 최적의 소리를 오케스트라에서 만들어 낼 수 있습니다. (이어령) 우리 주변을 살펴보십시오. 얼마나 많은 콘트라베이스가 우리의 영어예배부, 교회 및 사회를 지탱해 주고 있습니까? 바이올린 연주자들, 특히 제1바이올린 수석 연주자들이여! 누가 여러분의 음을 지탱해 주고 있는지 깨닫고, 여러분 주위에 있는 콘트라베이스들에게 겸허한 마음으로 감사하세요.

 

이 상황은 제게도 해당됩니다. 지난 9개월 동안 저는 모든 예배에서 각광을 독차지했지만, 신실하게 자기 본분을 묵묵히 수행하신 일꾼들이 많이 계셨습니다. 마태복음 6장에서 예수님께서 사람에게 보이고 존경받기 위해 구제와 기도와 금식을 하는 자들에게 경고하실 때, “그들이 자기 상을 온전히 받았느니라”라고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:2, 5, 16). 반면에 그것들을 은밀히 행하는 자들에게는 “은밀한 중에 보시는 너희 아버지께서 갚으시리라”라고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:4, 6, 18). 제 목회의 마지막 시점을 맞이하면서, ‘보이지 않는 곳에서 사역하시는 선교 동역자’ 여러분들께서 지금까지 애쓰시고 헌신적으로 섬겨 주신 것에 대해 깊이 감사드립니다. 우리 하나님 아버지께서 신실한 종들에게 약속하신 "WDGFS 상", 즉 “’잘 하였도다, 착하고 충성된 종아’ 상”을 여러분들에게 허락해 주시길 기원합니다! 마지막으로 영어예배부 행사와 활동을 지지해 주고 그것들에 실질적으로 참여해 주신 모든 영어예배부원들께도 감사드립니다. 형제자매 여러분, 여러분들이 그리울 겁니다. 하나님께서 여러분 모두를 복주시길 빕니다. 기도합시다.
